Varamis Rail leases a class 321 express freight train from Eversholt Rail

Varamis Rail and Eversholt Rail have reached an agreement which will see the entry into service of a Class 321 Swift Express freight train with the new freight operator in the UK.

Varamis will operate 5 nights a week from Birmingham to Scotland for a major parcel carrier.

The Class 321 Swift Express freight trains, which were previewed at Doncaster (you can read the RailAdvent article by clicking here), are all-electric trains that are environmentally friendly to weight heavy.

Old passenger trains have been repurposed for freight with a top speed of 100 mph.

Eversholt Rail is set to convert 4 Class 321 trains, with the work being carried out by Gemini at Wolverton and due to be completed by the end of 2022.

Negotiations are continuing with other operators regarding the trains and leases are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Paul Sutherland, Director of Customer Services at Eversholt Rail, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Varamis. We share a vision of decarbonising freight transport, encouraging the modal shift from road to rail while contributing to the UK government’s ambition to decarbonise the rail sector by 2050.”

Varamis Rail Managing Director Phil Read said: “The Varamis team are delighted to take delivery of the Class 321 Swift Express. As a newcomer to the TOC, I would like to thank Eversholt Rail for helping Varamis become the UK’s newest and greenest rail operator”.
