April 2021 has been a very busy month for the Lake Bala Railway, with staff and volunteers preparing the entire railway for reopening on Saturday, May 1, 2021.
With the easing of COVID-19 measures, UK heritage railways may start to reopen in recent weeks, with more to be expected in the months to come.
The Lake Bala Railway made many changes and worked to keep the line safe for passengers when it reopened.
Plexiglass screens have been installed around the store and cafe in accordance with UK government advice, along with ‘traffic lights’ to inform people of frequentation in certain areas before entering.
The platform canopy has been repainted, the office has been refurbished and a brand new roof has been built over the picnic area.
The Llangower Group was formed with a focus on the servicing and maintenance of the Llangower Station, located halfway along the line.
Locomotives and rolling stock
The locomotive shed received a new roof. The Guards Van Coach has been completed, which now features a better internal layout, including being suitable for wheelchairs.
Both âGeorge Bâ and âMaid Marianâ steam locomotives were inspected and steamed to see if they were ready to resume service. “George B” received some work on its injectors, the conical floats being adjusted.
At the Severn Valley Railway, the âholy warâ boiler underwent a hydraulic test and passed. The boiler is back in Llanuwchllyn where the team can complete the remaining tasks on the 10 year engine overhaul.
Preparation work, including hauling and reassembling the 7Â¼ inch track, was completed ahead of the railroad’s Re-Railed Event on Saturday, June 12, 2021.
