Ukrainian war: the British training program for “citizen soldiers” is extended | UK News

The UK is dramatically expanding a training program in Britain to potentially turn tens of thousands of Ukrainian recruits into frontline soldiers to fight Russia, Sky News has learned.

The combat course is extended from three weeks to five weeks, keeping more of the training in the UK, away from the threat of Russian missile strikes – a danger for anyone learning to be a soldier at sites across the country. interior UkraineIt’s understood.

Some 4,700 personnel have already completed the training at military bases in the North, South West and South East of England since it began in June, with commanders intending to continue support as long as Ukraine needs new troops to fight the Russian invasion.

Mr Wallace made four visits to check on training, the most recent being on Friday.

Advanced training

A defense source said this indicated that while “many politicians have been distracted by a summer leadership contest”, the defense secretary “only cares about keeping Ukrainians in their fight for national survival”.

If, as expected, Liz Truss becomes Prime Minister, Mr Wallace is expected to retain his post as Defense Secretary.

Other countries participating in the training program to help Ukraine are Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Lithuania.

The main course offered is based on basic British infantry training. It includes weapons handling, battlefield first aid, campaign craft, and patrol tactics.

The additional two weeks will allow for more advanced training, such as trench and urban warfare, vehicle-mounted operations, and battlefield exercises in simulated combat environments.

Training is delivered by elements of the British Army’s 11th Security Force Assistance Brigade and the RAF Regiment, alongside international instructors.
