The railways plan to acquire 25 diesel electric locomotives

ISLAMABAD, Sep 4 (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News – Sep 4, 2022): Pakistan Railways planned to procure up to 25 diesel electric locomotives for various shunting points across the country, which would help replace obsolete locomotives that will soon be discarded.

The project to procure and manufacture 25 shunting locomotives would be implemented in three years at an estimated cost of Rs. 14 billion, sources at the Ministry of Railways told APP.

Currently, they said, only 51 locomotives are operating for this service compared to the 98 shunting points at various railway stations across the country. Also, most old locomotives would be thrown away due to high maintenance costs.

They said the project is to purchase and manufacture 25 2,000 to 2,200 horsepower diesel shunting electric locomotives to replace surplus and uneconomical locomotives.

The sources said that the older locomotives consumed too much fuel and that in most cases the high-powered locomotives were underutilized during shunting operations.

They said that the addition of the new locomotives will improve the capacity of Pakistan Railways by removing bottlenecks in shunting heavy goods trains and placement of freight loads at departure stations in Karachi, Lahore and other places.

The sources said the role of purpose-built shunting locomotives was seen as the backbone of forming trains and replacing train rakes on the platform, as well as removing train rakes from the platform. form towards the washing line and sick lines.

They said the locomotives were not directly involved in revenue generation, but acted as support facilities for the placement, compounding and breakdown of rolling stock.

It was pertinent to mention here that the federal government has allocated Rs 2300 million under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) to repair about 100 diesel-electric locomotives.
