Severn Valley Railway based Hagley Hall steam locomotive 4930 returns to steam after 30 years

GWR Hall No. 4930 Hagley Hall returned to steam today on the Severn Valley Railway, and RailAdvent have been invited on board their first train.

The 4930, built in 1929, has been out of service since 1986 following the expiry of its boiler ticket.

While out of service, 4930 has been seen on static display at the MacArthur Glen shopping center in Swindon as well as more recently on display at The Engine House in Highley.

The redesign of Hagley Hall began in October 2013, with regular updates being released through the Friends of Hagley Hall group.

4930 Hagley Hall arrived in Kidderminster this morning after running Bridgnorth Light Engine and was greeted by guests and staff from the Severn Valley Railway and friends of the Hagley Hall group.

4930 Hagley Hall was then serviced and got its stock of coaches back for the trip.

We began with a minute of silence in remembrance of the life of Queen Elizabeth II, who sadly passed away yesterday.

Mike Ball started the proceedings, saying today was ‘the stuff of dreams’ to see 4930 Hagley Hall steaming again.

We spoke to Dave Insull who said the locomotive is expected to be used at the upcoming Fall Steam Gala and will also see heavy use during the upcoming Christmas season.

It was then time for the unveiling of the Hagley Hall nameplates, which was received with a round of applause

The locomotive was then blessed by the local Reverend, also a long-time volunteer with the railway, and then left to get down to his carriages.

We are currently on board the first train pulled by 4930 Hagley Hall and it is truly a sight to behold.

The locomotive is due to make two round trips to Bridgnorth today, before returning the light engine to Bridgnorth later this evening.

4930 Hagley Hall is now ready to haul trains at next week’s Autumn Steam Gala at Severn Valley Railway. The locomotive appears alongside visiting locomotives 45231 The Sherwood Forester, 9531, Jessie and Anne, the latter of which will run at The Engine House in Highley.

A special version of Monopoly and Top Trumps including 4930 plus a special beer was also available that day, and Helen Smith says these are available from the Severn Valley Railway shop.

What are your memories of 4930 Hagley Hall? Let us know in the comments below, or share your footage on LocoStop.

We would like to thank the Severn Valley Railway and the Friends of Hagley Hall group for inviting us to the official launch of this wonderful locomotive.
