Richie Ryan posts moving farewell to El Paso locomotive fans

Late last week, one of Locomotive FC’s original players said goodbye to El Paso in a touching message he delivered on Twitter. Richie Ryan, who arrived as one of Mark Lowry’s first player signings, announced he played his last game in a Locomotive kit.

Interestingly, Locomotive FC responded to Ryan’s announcement congratulating him on his four seasons with the club and then announced his retirement.

The only problem with that tweet was that Ryan hadn’t made his retirement decision official. He called it a career the next day.

Ryan’s remarkable professional career spanned a total of 19 seasons and began with Sunderland in the 2002-03 EPL campaign. It ended in Tampa, Florida last Wednesday night. However, Ryan’s last home game on Saturday October 8 against Orange County SC was particularly emotional as his family were present and on the pitch for an emotional embrace with the midfielder. Ryan picked up an assist on an Andrew Fox goal in that game.

It’s been a bizarre last season for the Irishman, who at one point was away from the club for over a week. Rumors have swirled that there has been a dispute between the veteran midfielder and the club, but the two have remained tight-lipped about the situation. Ryan returned to the roster and played the remainder of the 2022 campaign with El Paso.

It will be interesting to see what’s next for Ryan in professional football. He was in the process of getting his coaching license and he was also invaluable in spotting and developing young talent. Lowry credited Ryan with discovering Diego Luna and goaltender Evan Newton credited Richie with bringing him to El Paso on loan with the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS. El Paso will lose a great ambassador of the game and one of the fan favorites of the past four years.
