Railway Retreats is adjacent to the Northiam Station of the Kent & East Sussex Railway in the peaceful and scenic Rother Valley on the Kent/Sussex border.
The company offers a unique range of carefully preserved wagons and carriages adapted for the ultimate in heritage rail travel for all ages, with steam locomotives regularly running under 20 feet.
From the small 1940s ICI salt van and ammunition wagon, through a beautifully restored GWR Toad brake van to a Southern Railway Maunsell Van B newspaper wagon and Mk1 dining car, all of these houses are painted in period colors with as many original materials. and appearance retained. Inside, the cars offer a mix of traditional and contemporary quirky design, and sleep two to six in perfect comfort.
The latest addition to the lineup, perfect for a family of four, is “Pipe Dream”, based on what was until recently a rusty wagon chassis.
This now has a replica bodywork built on top with the benefit of being wider than standard gauge, to allow more clearance and an opening window that looks directly into the K&ESR engines taking on water.
It is presented in the black LNER wagon livery and, despite being a new build, feels very comfortable with its older neighbours.
Not to mention Railway Retreats’ new “Gate Guard”, the Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 Saddle Tank which now stands at the entrance to Railway Retreats to welcome you for your holiday on the rails.
