Motherwell councilor’s delight at huge investment in town’s railway station

A Motherwell councilor hailed a huge investment in the town’s railway station.

Work has started at Muir Street in Motherwell to create a new transport hub at the station.

The North Lanarkshire Council scheme will see a new access road constructed from the roundabout north of Hamilton Road, behind buildings to the left of Hamilton Road and Muir Street, to join the existing road in front of the station.

This will provide space for buses, a new taxi stand, a drop-off/pick-up point and disabled parking spaces.

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Councilor Agnes Magowan welcomed the Scottish Government’s investment in the project.

The SNP representative told Lanarkshire Live: ‘This is great news for the town and the wider region.

“There will be significant disruption to the area as the work is completed, but the substantial investment will provide a transport hub that will put Motherwell firmly on the map, while supporting local jobs and apprenticeships.”

Investment for the Muir Street scheme has come from the SNP government, along with North Lanarkshire Council and the Glasgow Region City Deal.

The £2million project will complement the improvement work currently being carried out by ScotRail at the station.

Balfour Beatty is the contractor for both projects, which are expected to be completed by July 2022.

A total of £16.5m will be invested in the station and Muir Street, with Transport Scotland, ScotRail and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport funding station improvements.

Councilor Magowan added: ‘Motherwell Station is already a busy interchange and this upgrade will ensure Motherwell is ready to take its place as a place to set up and grow businesses.

Full details of the project, including an interactive plan, are available on the council’s website and updates will be provided as work progresses.
