Live Travel Rules Update: Traffic Light Lists Removed When New ROW List Arrives

Following the Department for Transport’s announcement on September 17, the UK’s traffic light system was removed this morning at 4 a.m.

In the future, there will no longer be an Amber or Green List to check before travel – a single crucial Red List (currently containing 54 countries) and a ROW or “rest of the world” list containing everything else.

The other big change today is for unvaccinated travelers and those who have not yet received the two doses of the vaccine – they will have to self-isolate for 10 days when they return to the UK, whether they come or not from a Red List country. .

“Today’s changes mean a simpler and more straightforward system. A solution with less testing and lower costs, allowing more people to travel, see loved ones or do business around the world while giving the travel industry a boost, ”said Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps when the changes were announced.

In other travel news, Turkey and Croatia have both removed the requirement for a pre-travel PCR test for double-vaccinated passengers from the UK.

BA brings back the A380s

Many observers in the aviation industry had written off the Airbus A380 “SuperJumbo” once the coronavirus pandemic had taken hold in the world.

The prevailing view was that the economy of the plane – with four engines and up to 600 seats – made it unsuitable for post-Covid operations.

The double-deck plane has been pulled from the fleets of some airlines, while other carriers, including British Airways, had transported their A380s to long-term storage sites.

But BA has now taken the industry by surprise by bringing back five of its 12 giant jets next month – initially on short-haul routes to Frankfurt and Madrid.

Closure of the Trans-London rail line overnight

No Thameslink train will cross central London between London St Pancras International overnight.

The line via City Thameslink and Farringdon will be unexpectedly closed between midnight tonight and 5 a.m. on Tuesday for emergency repairs.

Thameslink connects two airports in London, Gatwick and Luton.

National Rail Inquiries tell passengers, “Network Rail needs to fix a set of faulty points in the tunnels in the London St Pancras International area.

“They have to do this overnight, because any other time will cause a large-scale disruption of Thameslink services.

“Thameslink is currently working on a plan for its Sutton / Luton, Horsham / Peterborough and Brighton / Bedford services, and will provide more details when the trip planners are updated.”

Passengers will be able to use alternatives by bus or metro at no additional cost.

Could the Red List be significantly reduced this week?

Some industry sources report that the UK’s red list will be drastically reduced later this week, with The telegraph going so far as to say that it will drop from 54 countries to just nine.

If true, that would mean doubly vaccinated travelers returning from countries like Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa would no longer have to self-quarantine at a government-mandated hotel upon arrival. UK.

It should be noted that similar predictions were made ahead of the last travel update on September 17, with many media reporting that the Red List would be ‘reduced’ by that date – but in the end, only eight countries were removed. of a strong 62- list.

The red list is expected to be reviewed this week, with changes announced around Thursday, October 7.

The independentSimon Calder, travel expert, said: “It is increasingly clear that the absurd red list of 54 countries in the UK is causing substantial economic and emotional damage while conferring no public health benefit.

“When ministers started enforcing hotel quarantines eight months ago, they were riding a wave of popular support and added a few dozen more countries to grossly disproportionate travel restrictions thanks to panic responses backed by inconsistent data.

“I imagine a lot of effort is put into finding justifications for keeping South Africa on the red list for much of the year, and unblocking them afterwards.

“In the last round of changes, when the red list was reduced to ‘just’ 54 countries, most of the eight countries were popular with the crowd, especially Egypt and Turkey. If the government wants to generate more positive coverage, you can expect Thailand, the Dominican Republic, and South Africa to all come out of the mandatory hotel quarantine category. “

The Turkish Tourist Board said in a statement: “Turkey is ready and delighted to welcome travelers from across the UK again this month and beyond.

“Without any PCR testing requirements, and following our removal from the UK government’s Red List, traveling to Turkey couldn’t be easier. “

What is on the red list?

This morning saw a crucial change in UK travel rules, with the removal of the green and amber “traffic light” lists in favor of two lists: a red list and a ROW (rest of the world) list.

But what’s on the red list these days?

Until two weeks ago, 62 countries were on the list of dangerous travel destinations, but in the most recent change on September 22, eight countries were removed, including Turkey and Egypt.

However, the confusion was even greater for travelers, as countries such as the Maldives and Sri Lanka were removed from the red list, but the Foreign Ministry continued to advise against all but essential travel to these countries.

But what’s on the ROW list?

Once orange countries like Spain, Greece and France will join once green countries like Slovenia, Switzerland and Canada, with the same set of rules for each.
