Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway comes second in prestigious awards

The restoration of a Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway diesel locomotive was a finalist in two categories of the 2021 Heritage Railway Association awards.

The restoration lasted almost 30 years and is the third year in which the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway has been shortlisted for an HRA award.

The Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway was co-awarded with the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway for its reopening in 2009.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2021 ceremony had to be held virtually.

The LCLR’s Skeggy Simplex was a finalist for the Coiley Locomotive Engineering Award, which was won by the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway’s for the restoration of the Welsh Pony and was also a finalist for the Diesel Locomotion Award, which was won by the class of the Severn Valley Railway. 50 Alliance.

After a 25 year restoration by the LCLR Historic Vehicles Trust, the locomotive is now in service at LCLR in Skegness Water Leisure Park.

Richard Shepherd said: “It’s wonderful to be recognized by these awards and to hear and see the ‘Skeggy Simplex’ start again after all these years of work. It was not an easy task, but the persistence in solving problems and finding or manufacturing replacement parts has paid off. I don’t think it occurred to us that one day our efforts would be judged alongside some of the biggest names in heritage railroads, whose accomplishments we respect and admire over the years.

“We congratulate the winners and hope these awards encourage more people to join us to be a part of our beautiful railroad to Skegness.”
