June 2021 update on the new 82045 steam locomotive

The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust has released its June 2021 build update for its new steam locomotive, the British Railways (BR) Standard Class 3 Tank No. 82045.

A key milestone is expected to be completed soon, with construction work on the lead and tail pony trucks almost complete.

A lot of work has been done over the past few years to develop both trucks from concept to part manufacturing.

The two trucks differ in design, the first truck following the same design used on No. 80079 (BR Standard Class 4 tank) and No. 43106 (London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Ivatt Class 4), with these two engines being based at the Severn Valley Railway (SVR).

The follower truck follows a design using only Standard 2 and 3 tanks, with The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust working with the group producing a new build BR Standard Class 2, 84030, at the Bluebell Railway.

On the boiler, sections of the outer combustion chamber begin to be bolted together to test each panel to see if they line up correctly. Slider machining is currently in progress with the bolt holes counterbored.
