Football phenomenon Guillen Middle boards EP Locomotive U15 team

EL PASO, TX (KTSM) – Alex Galindo, an outstanding player with Guillen Middle and Segundo Barrio Futbol Club, has taken it to the next level, securing a spot on the Locomotive FC Under-15 team.

According to ISD El Paso officials, the midfielder trains regularly, balancing both football and college, hoping that one day he could step into the pro ranks.

The shy eighth grader humbly talks about football – a family sport and way of life since he was 5 years old – without knowing his own talent.

“It’s great to be a part of the team,” said the eighth grader. “I hope to pass (the ball) to help score. I like what it feels like to be on the pitch.

The manager and coach of Segundo Barrio FC de Galindo, Simon Chandler, is quick to sing his praises.

“He has all the attributes to be able to play football at a high level,” said Chandler, community schools coordinator for EPISD. “Alex is one of the most talented players we have seen in the past 10 years.”

Chandler, a coach and former Hart Elementary teacher, met Alex when he was in first grade, teaching second there. Chandler, who considers Loco’s 14-15 team to be some of the most competitive for his age group, encouraged Alex to give it a try knowing he needed a more stimulating opportunity to develop his talent.

“Like many kids in the neighborhood, we knew he loved soccer and was a good player,” said Chandler. “As he got older, his talent started to become more evident. Besides his technical abilities, we were also impressed with his attitude and personality.

Chandler adds that it’s hard to know where Alex’s talent will take him.

“We hope Alex will follow in the footsteps of Felix Casas, former Hart student and former Segundo Barrio Futbol Club player, who recently signed with Locomotive Football Club USL Academy,” said Chandler.

As for his thoughts on Chandler, Alex holds him in high regard, both sharing a passion for the beautiful game.

“He’s a great person and he helps a lot,” said Alex. “I learned a lot from him.
