The legendary Flying Scotsman locomotive will return to the South East once again in 2022, running a route near Surrey for five days at the end of August this year. It will provide non-stop return services on the 11-mile Bluebell Railway between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead in West Sussex.
Tickets for the journeys, which take place around the bank holiday weekend of August 25-29, will be available on the Bluebell Railway website from May 1. All seats must be pre-booked in advance. Visitors will also be able to view the locomotive on static display in Sheffield Park from August 17-24 and August 30-September 5.
The Flying Scotsman recently passed through Surrey on a trip from London to Salisbury, via Staines, Virginia Water, Woking and Brookwood on March 24. He is not expected in the county for the rest of the year, making Sussex dates in August the best chance of seeing him nearby.

The famous locomotive isn’t the only piece of railway history to be seen in our county recently. 61306 Mayflower passed through the North County on April 5, while 35028 Clan Line passed through much of Surrey last Friday (April 8), and one of our reporters was on hand to see it at the station in Chertsey.
The scheduled August dates will only be the second time the Flying Scotsman has traveled on the Bluebell Railway. Its previous trip in April 2017 was the first time the engine had visited the area in over half a century.
Flying Scotsman was named after the daily 10-hour rail line between London and Edinburgh that it used regularly. Commissioned in 1923, it was the first locomotive of the new London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).
Passengers on the train in Sussex this summer will be among the first to see it after a redesign it is currently undergoing ahead of its centenary celebrations next year. Improvement work is focused on its boiler and the required retubing and recertification.
