Epping Ongar Railway buys old Llangollen Railway coach to expand fleet

The Epping Ongar Railway has announced the arrival of a British Railways (BR) Mark 1 coach to augment its existing fleet.

In May 2021, a variety of assets previously owned by Llangollen Railway PLC were auctioned off.

Among the items offered for auction was a BR MK 1 car, open car no. 4947 in “carmine and cream” livery.

Already owning three coaches of the same color and looking to expand their set, the Epping Ongar Railway made a bid for the cart.

Following acceptance of their offer, transportation was arranged, Monday May 24, 2021 seeing the arrival of the newly purchased coach at North Weald Station, Epping Ongar Railway.

Staff and volunteers have assessed the condition of the trainer to see if any work is needed, with only minor issues that can be fixed in the coming weeks.

The addition of this coach will form a set of four “Carmine and Cream” for the railway, which will increase the capacity of certain events to allow more people to travel along the line.

This will benefit upcoming events such as:

  1. Peppa Pig and George
  2. Trains for Mother’s Day
  3. Patrol patrol

The Llangollen Railway Trust hopes to reopen the line later this year.
