City Railway Factory will manufacture fast freight trains | Chennai News

Chennai: Integral Coach Factory (ICF) will manufacture Vande Bharat type freight trains which will not require locomotives for express parcel services.
The 16-car rakes will have cars that can be used to move refrigerated perishables like fish and vegetables and also to transport e-commerce packages. They are called Gati Shakti trains.
Manufactured on the Vande Bharat platform, the trainsets will be able to run at 160 km/h with greater power to carry the load.
The rakes will be designed to accommodate standard size cargo containers such as those used in aircraft with a capacity of three to six tonnes.
The cars will have two sliding doors on each side and will have rolling floors to facilitate the loading and unloading of containers.
“The project is at the design stage. The factory has prepared an approximate manufacturing schedule and aims to ship the first rake by December this year,” an official said.
Manufacturing of the shells for the coach will begin in July and the first rake will be completed in November and testing and commissioning will be carried out in December, said a presentation prepared by ICF on the new rakes.
An ICF official said the railways wanted to speed up the manufacture of new freight trains so that rapid parcel services could be leveraged to make the most of industry demand in the years to come.
According to the India Brand Equity Foundation, the e-commerce market is expected to reach US$111 billion by 2024 and US$200 billion by 2026.
ICF also plans to manufacture 75 Vande Bharat trains with an improved design for passenger movement by August 2023. The plant, which has manufactured 3,101 cars of different variants, has been assigned a target of 4,275 cars for 2022-2023.
