As a new era dawns for the tallest attraction of its kind in North America, here’s a look at the history of the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway:

1888: Wisconsin inventor and entrepreneur Zalmon Simmons visits Pikes Peak to inspect its telegraphic insulators atop the summit. Two tough days on a mule made him think of a more efficient and comfortable way to get to the top of the mountain.

1889: Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Co. is founded and construction begins.

1890: Three steam locomotives arrive from Baldwin Locomotive Works in Pennsylvania. The first passengers on the train reach the summit a year later.

1925: Simmons sells the railway to Spencer Penrose, owner of Broadmoor.

1938: The decade sees a change in steam and coal engines. This year, an autonomous gasoline wagon is installed, considered the first of its kind.

1964: Where the General Electric Co. of New York was called upon for the gas fleet, now Swiss Locomotive Works enters the fold. The Swiss company delivers two red wagons – the first in a series that sets the standard for the modern era.

1974: With tourism booming and operators looking for a train that can carry more than 200 people, Swiss Locomotive Works delivers a pair of diesel-hydraulic wagons. Others were eventually added and used in the 2000s.

2018: After 126 years of service, the railway decides not to open for the season, following a major assessment of infrastructure and equipment.

2021: The railway returns with improved trains – and three new ones from Swiss manufacturer Stadler – as well as a restructured cogwheel track. The deposit is also renovated.

Tournament status

Thursday-Saturday

At Stodden Park in Butte, Montana

Champion 2019: Belgrade

Who’s back: Frenchtown, Polson, Laurel, Livingston, Columbia Falls, Lewistown

Who is new: Corvallis, Glendive, Libby, Billings Central, Havre, Butte Central

At the beginning: After three consecutive state championships, Belgrade is no longer part of the Class A competition, which means that a new team will be crowned champions for the first time since 2017. The Polson Pirates appear to be a strong candidate, as they in addition boast admirable team chemistry. to their record of 19-1-1. The Pirates were favored to win the 2020 State Championship, but were not given the chance to hit the pitch due to the pandemic. As the sitting champions of the Northwest Conference, the Pirates, led by senior star Josie Caye, could prove to be a tough game for any team in the tournament. The Pirates have a first-round pass and will face the winner of Corvallis and Dawson County on Thursday.

In the circle: The undefeated Laurel Locomotives are also a team to watch, as they enter the State Tournament after a 5-4 win over Livingston in the Southeast Division Championship game. Ella Crookston pitched a full game in the divisional championship and will be the one to watch on the mound in the state tournament. In addition to the Crookston pitch, the locomotives are equipped with powerful hitters, including Mia Andersen and Taylor Feller. But the champions of the Southwestern Conference, the Frenchtown Broncs, are not to be counted. Frenchtown coach Eli Field has guided his team to ten conference titles in 16 years as a coach. Hitting isn’t the Bronc’s only strength, as their shot is led by Sadie Smith and Kendra Jacobs. But the team’s greatest strength is the work ethic and preparation, according to Field.

Around the bases: Billings Central took last place in the Southeast State tournament with a victory over Hardin in the divisional tournament’s third-place game. Le Havre fell to Lewistown in the Northeast Division Championship, with both teams participating in the State Tournament. Glendive defeated Miles City in the third-place divisional game to secure his place in the tournament. Butte Central improved throughout the year as they lost to other Columbia Falls and Lewistown state tournament teams early in the season. But as the season wore on, Butte Central coach Chunky Thatcher saw his side as competitive as the state tournament approached. Libby also made the cut, representing the North West Division.

Weather and attendance: Cloudy skies and temperatures ranging from 50 to 60 degrees were forecast. Daily tournament passes are $ 8 ($ 6 for students) and tournament passes are $ 21 ($ 14 for students). Tournament programs and products will be sold during the tournament.

Make an offer to put Dame Vera Lynn back on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway tracks https://raileisure.com/make-an-offer-to-put-dame-vera-lynn-back-on-the-north-yorkshire-moors-railway-tracks/ https://raileisure.com/make-an-offer-to-put-dame-vera-lynn-back-on-the-north-yorkshire-moors-railway-tracks/#respond Wed, 26 May 2021 09:30:22 +0000 https://raileisure.com/make-an-offer-to-put-dame-vera-lynn-back-on-the-north-yorkshire-moors-railway-tracks/

We have six locomotives currently in service, including the much-loved LMS Black 5 # 5428 “ Eric Treacy ”, and its sister locomotive, the LMS Black 5 44871, which was hired to cover the immense distances traveled by our fleet of locomotives. each year – over 50,000 miles through the beautiful North York Moors and beyond to Whitby.

In addition to guest engines, NYMR resident locomotives are also in service, including: “SR S15 class # 825” built in 1920; “BR 9F No.92134” built in 1957; “BR Standard 4 Tank No. 80136”, built in 1956; plus the oldest current steam locomotive on the NYMR, “Lambton Colliery No.29”, built in 1904 – retracing over 117 years of steam locomotive development and history.

These are exciting times at NYMR – not least because, ahead of the first anniversary next month of the passing of “ The Force’s Sweetheart, ” we’re excited to announce the start of the supply review for Locomotive No. 3672 “ Lady Vera Lynn ”. .

It is hoped that work on the Dame Vera Lynn locomotive can be completed for the 2024-25 season.

It is hoped that work on the Dame Vera Lynn locomotive can be completed for the 2024-25 season.

A call to raise the £ 600,000 and over needed to fully restore the special locomotive and put it back into service currently stands at over £ 175,000, thanks to the generosity of the general public.

It is estimated that an additional £ 450,000 is still needed to fully fund this important project.

However, with the funds raised so far, the NYMR has announced the start of the restoration of the locomotive, proceeding to the tender.

The locomotive is part of the general plan of the Department of Motive Power (MPD) of the NYMR; it is hoped that the work on Dame Vera Lynn can be completed by 2024/2025, in connection with the 80th anniversary of the locomotive and the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.

Supply restoration will be undertaken by Rochdale-based Riley & Son, and involves the renewal of the supply’s all-new water tank, new springs, new axlebox bearings and a train overhaul. of brake.

Ian Foot, member of the restoration team, said: “This is a monumental step in the restoration of the locomotive; the project is doable, and determination, passion and drive are there to see it

“However, like any other steam locomotive, it does require money, and we urge anyone who would like to see it back on track on its 80th birthday to donate to the call.”

Clifford Brown, who bought Dame Vera Lynn and Repton in the late 1980s, put both locomotives in trust at the NYMR when he began to suffer from health problems.

While Repton has enjoyed regular overhauls and periods of traffic, Dame Vera has sadly been left out of action.

As we celebrate the good news, we still need your help so that we can get number 3672 Dame Vera Lynn back to steam and visitors can once again enjoy the sight and sound of this iconic locomotive!

A £ 10 donation will help buy nuts and bolts or a £ 100 donation will help buy parts such as new fire bars.

Visit the appeal website www.nymr.co.uk/DVL for more information and to find out how you can help support the restoration of this iconic locomotive.

Live information on steam locomotives thanks to the partnership between Swanage Railway and Real Time Trains https://raileisure.com/live-information-on-steam-locomotives-thanks-to-the-partnership-between-swanage-railway-and-real-time-trains/ https://raileisure.com/live-information-on-steam-locomotives-thanks-to-the-partnership-between-swanage-railway-and-real-time-trains/#respond Mon, 24 May 2021 09:00:00 +0000 https://raileisure.com/live-information-on-steam-locomotives-thanks-to-the-partnership-between-swanage-railway-and-real-time-trains/

Live train information is now available for the first time on a heritage railway thanks to the Swanage Railway and real-time trains and a grant from the Culture Restoration Fund.

Digital displays in 1950s-style bulletin board frames will give up-to-date information about trains, including the locomotive that carries them and the facilities on board. These cards have been installed at Swanage and Corfe Castle stations, and further cards are expected to be installed at Norden and Harmans Cross.

This live train information is now also available on the trains website in real time.

Screenshot via Real Time Trains website

This is all possible thanks to a partnership between the Swanage Railway and Real Time Trains, which provides live train information to three million passengers per year.

The new system works with GPS equipment that has been installed in the wagons, which then returns the position of the train via mobile phone networks.

For the past 14 months, Tom Cairns has been working on the Know Your Train feature on Real Time Trains. It has hosted Locomotive Services Ltd, Avanti West Coast, Northern and GB Railfreight, among others, but the Swanage Railway is the first heritage railway to join the program.

Swanage Railway Passenger Services Manager Trevor Parsons said: “We are very grateful for the innovative and imaginative technical expertise of Realtime Trains in producing such an attractive, clear, concise and attractive, constantly updated for our passengers.

“Housed in traditional 1950s bulletin board style frames – the type that displayed timetables in the days of steam trains – the new digital displays are a very effective mix of old and new; the best of our railway heritage with the best of up-to-date information technology.

“The Swanage Railway is always looking for ways to further improve the information we give our passengers to keep them informed, and we are very grateful to the government for their £ 223,200 grant from the Recovery Fund. culture for heritage – which was awarded to us in the fall of 2020 – part of which was used to pay for this important improvement, ”added Trevor, who is also a volunteer guard and flagman on the heritage line.

Tom Cairns, Founder and Operator of Realtime Trains, said: “It’s wonderful to see the new system up and running – I wanted to incorporate the visual aspect of Swanage Railway’s heritage brand with a modern twist that was visually appealing and engaged the public interest.

“We completely designed the hardware and software for the new system. Train passengers everywhere – whether on the main line or on a heritage line – want more information, so it’s important to find a way to deliver accurate, live and useful information to customers.

“Realtime Trains has built a new software package combining the strengths of our mainline information platform with the understanding of heritage and private train operations to provide passengers with clear and up-to-date information in the same way as mainline train operators can do this.

“The Swanage Railway contributed to the development of the new system and we are delighted with the results. The work is new to my current national rail network mainline train information system and has required me to follow a different path of technical development, ”added Tom, who lives in Bournemouth.

EL PASO, Texas – El Paso Locomotive FC ended Rio Grande Valley FC’s winning streak at Southwest University Park behind a goal from forward Luis Solignac on Saturday night. Solignac’s 18th goal is the fastest in Locomotive history and currently represents the league’s fastest goal during the 2021 season.

“I’m really happy,” said head coach and technical director Mark Lowry. “It’s only our second game of the season, but it’s kind of like the first with the recess last week. We weren’t able to get the momentum, the fitness levels or build relationships on the pitch, and that was [RGV’s] fourth game this season. They’ve won three games so far, it’s a good, strong team that comes there with confidence. We started the game well. Lucho [Solignac] with great press. It is not luck; it was a smart game. I had a feeling he was going to score tonight because he had been so good in training.

Locomotive got off to a dream start with high pressure which paid off with a goal from the first minute. As RGV goalkeeper Tyler Deric threw the ball out of his own box, Solignac put his body in the way, forcing a rebound into the back of the net. With RGV continuing the game for the remainder of the first half, Locomotive managed to escape with scoring chances, including a long ball from Mechack defender Jerome who found midfielder Nick Ross close to goal. Ross took a touch to put the ball on Deric, but ultimately sent it over the frame as well.

At the other end of the field, goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas, on loan from MLS team Minnesota United, scored a clean sheet on his debut. Tested in just one stop tonight, the Locomotive back line held firm against an RGV team chasing the game to help secure the three points at Southwest University Park.

FOLLOWING: El Paso Locomotive hits the road for the first time in the 2021 season, playing Sporting Kansas City II for the first time in franchise history. Kick-off from Children’s Mercy Victory Field in Kansas City is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. KST and will be broadcast live on ESPN +.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – For the second day in a row, El Paso Locomotive FC have added another goalkeeper to their roster. The team announced on Friday that they had signed on loan from Adrian Zendejas of Minnesota United, pending league and federation approval.

The move comes just 24 hours after the signing of Ben Beaury, who started last season for Reno 1868 FC.

Locomotive FC is a short keeper with starter Logan Ketterer still playing with Portland Timbers FC on loan. The club found themselves with 19-year-old Marco Canales as the only real option on the roster at the start of the week. The two additions now give options to head coach Mark Lowry when El Paso hosts Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday.

“As we enter a time of uncertainty with a lot of games to come and the transfer window closing on June 1, it was important for us to cover all possibilities,” said Lowry. “Our job is to always protect the integrity of this club and to make sure, whatever the scenarios that present themselves in the coming weeks, that we are prepared, in control, and that we continue to be competitive every day and to win matches. We would like to thank Minnesota United for helping us move this project forward with Adrian and are delighted with what he can offer the group over the next few weeks.

Zendejas, 25, comes to El Paso with extensive experience at the USL Championship level. The California native made his professional debut with USL team Sporting Kansas City II, helping the club to two USL Cup finals (2016, 2017). Following his outstanding performance in the 2016 season with SKCII, Zendejas signed with his parent MLS club Sporting Kansas City, where he made appearances at the 2018 US Open Cup. He shut out Real Salt Lake during the season. of a 2-0 win and made five saves against FC Dallas to secure a 3-2 win in the round of 16. Zendejas was traded to Nashville SC before being traded again to Minnesota United where he is currently signed. .

It’s unclear who will start in the net, but Zendejas is expected to be the guy when Locomotive FC take the pitch against Toros on Saturday night.

“It’s up to Mark [Lowry] decision, ”Zendejas said. “I just know I’ll definitely be on the list with one of those 18 spots. I just arrived a few days ago so I’m settling in and I’m really, really excited to be here.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN +.

Leandro Carrijo shows great esteem for locomotive fans https://raileisure.com/leandro-carrijo-shows-great-esteem-for-locomotive-fans/ https://raileisure.com/leandro-carrijo-shows-great-esteem-for-locomotive-fans/#respond Sat, 22 May 2021 00:05:33 +0000 https://raileisure.com/leandro-carrijo-shows-great-esteem-for-locomotive-fans/

El Paso Locomotive FC will finally resume their regular season on Saturday night when they host RGV FC Toros at Southwest University Park. The Locos are coming out of an opening draw of the season against their biggest rival, New Mexico United (1-1).

Before, Leandro carrijo came in as a late substitute and managed to score a batter-style equalizer to give El Paso their first point of the season for the draw.

What caught my attention almost as much as his dramatic lens were the comments he made regarding Locomotive fans during the post-match press conference. After being asked what it was like to have Southwest University Park filled to 70% of its capacity with fans, Carrijo spoke eloquently in acknowledging Locos’ fan base.

Carrijo commented: “For us players it’s important to get the result, but just as important to have our fans there. We must show them our fight and our best efforts, because they are making efforts and sacrifices to come forward and support us. We have to fight for our team, our fans and our families. Having their presence in the stadium is very important to us.

The El Paso forward, with the comments, showed appreciation and consideration for the fans that other local sports teams haven’t heard enough about in this town. Carrijo has shown once again, as he has done for 6 years, his affinity for the people of Borderland since his arrival here in 2015 as a forward for FC Juarez.

The Locos’ second game of the season on Saturday night is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. MST and will be televised on the CW locally and on ESPN + nationally.

Tasmania’s West Coast Wilderness Railway attracts your everyday tourist, as well as a certain type of enthusiast. “You’ve got your ‘bonkers’ as we like to call them,” says Andrew Wiles, Heritage Steam Train Supervisor and Customer Experience Guide, as we return to the lunar landscape of Queenstown – a legacy of the mining, toxic fumes and logging. In 2021, the train is so popular with travelers stuck in Australia that you need to book weeks in advance. I’m on a half-day trip to Dubbil Barril, the beautifully spelled stop tucked away in the rainforest covered in velvety moss.

“These are the people who love steam trains,” says Wiles. “Then you get the people who like the historical side of things. People who want to know more about the cities – Queenstown, Strahan, Zeehan. There are people who love the rainforest and the rivers. It appeals to so many different people. “

Speaking with Wiles, I suspect some puffer nut is standing in front of me. “They have a certain romantic quality,” he says. “You have all the nice moving parts and the steam. They are living beings. They have their own different personalities and moods – good and bad. They are simply adorable.

The train has also become the perfect place to ask the question. Wiles saw three marriage proposals on the train. “I met my partner on the railroad,” he adds, “it’s almost the love train in some ways. There are at least three or four couples who met on the railroad. “

The steepest steam transport in the Southern Hemisphere, helped up and down the track’s most extreme slopes by the Swiss-designed Abt rack-and-pinion system, is Tasmania’s most luxurious rail experience. Those passing in the wild horse-drawn carriage have access to the open-air viewing balcony, receive welcome sparkling wine, and get food along the way. We are all equal, however, when we stack up to watch the locomotive spin on Dubbil Barril’s turntable. This means that our car, a replica of the original now at Victoria’s Puffing Billy Railway, shifts from the caboose position to just behind the locomotive, where we see the drivers at work. Commentaries on board recognize the good, bad and ugly of the area: after leaving the drama of the King River Gorge, for example, we learn that the rust-orange-colored Queen River flowing next to us is a legacy of the wildest days of copper mining.

The Mount Lyell Mining and Railroad Company is the reason this railroad exists. Hundreds of workers waved picks – in heavy rain and deep mud – to make a route through rainforest and rock, first to a river port, then to the coast. When completed at Strahan in 1899, the line was not only a magnificent feat of engineering, it also connected the west coast of Tasmania to Melbourne so much more directly that women living in remote areas could dress in it too. fashion than their big city friends.

Roads eventually made the line redundant and it closed in 1963. After passengers returned in 2000, it became the West Coast Wilderness Railway in 2002. The 28-ton locomotives that carried these riches to port in Canada 19th century are the same as today. .

The site of the Queen Victoria Launceston Museum and Art Gallery in Inveresk is built around the Launceston Railway Workshops, once one of the state’s largest industrial sites. Unsurprisingly, the museum dedicates a permanent exhibition to the state’s railway history. He describes Tasmania’s once extensive rail network as having an impact “as deep as the internet is to us today”, as it was not until 1964 that roads connected the settlements on the west coast to the north. of State. From 1954, a prestigious passenger train – the Tasman Limited – commuted between Hobart and Wynyard in the northwest. The glory days did not last, with Tasmania’s last passenger train service in 1978. Today, thanks to the dedication of enthusiasts who work hard in workshops and sheds to restore and maintain rolling stock, people can still ride fragments of state rail lines.

A fifty-minute drive north of Queenstown (if you don’t stop in Zeehan to admire the decommissioned locomotives of the West Coast Heritage Center) is Tullah, a former mining community redeveloped into a Hydroelectric Commission village. It is also another steam train town. Wee Georgie Wood is a six ton ‘midget locomotive’ built in Leeds in 1924 and named after a small British music hall artist. It operates on a two-foot (60-centimeter) gauge – a measurement that allowed trains to squeal around tighter curves made necessary by rough terrain. Wee Georgie was powered by coal when it was put into service on the North Mount Farrell Mine Streetcar, carrying ore to the Emu Bay Line connecting Zeehan and Burnie. Today, wood is thrown into the combustion chamber to produce enough heat to turn up to 200 liters of water into steam. I board the 15-passenger dinky for a little ride punctuated by whistling toots.

From Tullah, the next stop for puffer lovers is Sheffield, 101 kilometers away. The Tasmanian City of Murals is also home to the Sheffield Steam and Heritage Center. Here, the Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society runs a steam train along another two-foot track. It also hosts SteamFest, an annual event that draws thousands of visitors.

I pass through Sheffield on the festival weekend: the joint is skipping and the queue for train rides is long. As I’m finding out, it’s a push to bundle multiple heritage train experiences into a single weekend, given the distances and race times. For me, taking the train from Sheffield will have to wait another time.

Near Devonport on Sheffield’s north coast is the Don River Railway, which offers 30-minute round trips along the namesake tidal river. At the junction near Coles Beach, passengers descend onto the grassy platform, take a few photos, and jump on board to return to Don. I visit on a day without a steam locomotive, so the conductor just walks around the car to change direction. Travel always channels an old-fashioned vibe, especially when a driver comes to click on tickets and sit on armrests to chat with passengers. None of the children on board are looking at their phones.

Not all Tasmanian rail experiences are the sit and relax type. Maydena is a former logging and commercial town located along a dead end road to Franklin National Park – Gordon Wild Rivers. It follows Derby’s lead in the northeast by becoming a hot destination for mountain biking. Many homes are now vacation rentals. The permanent population is approximately 50 inhabitants.

Some locals help lead a quieter chase for visitors. Maydena Railtrack Riders use part of a historic railway line (when arriving in Maydena you will pass several “Level crossing not used” signs). The pilot in this attraction is not you but rather the two- to four-seater wheeled vehicle that pedals along the tracks. It’s tough work – the trail to the Florentine station is not flat – but an all-terrain quad can push those signaling.

“A lot of people who are interested in rail want to give it a try,” says experiment creator Geoff Williams. “We try to make sure that it doesn’t matter if you’re in good shape or not.” I’m happy with that, because I’m blowing and blowing as hard as Wee Georgie Wood when that push finally comes to push.
