As a new era dawns for the tallest attraction of its kind in North America, here’s a look at the history of the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway:

1888: Wisconsin inventor and entrepreneur Zalmon Simmons visits Pikes Peak to inspect its telegraphic insulators atop the summit. Two tough days on a mule made him think of a more efficient and comfortable way to get to the top of the mountain.

1889: Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Co. is founded and construction begins.

1890: Three steam locomotives arrive from Baldwin Locomotive Works in Pennsylvania. The first passengers on the train reach the summit a year later.

1925: Simmons sells the railway to Spencer Penrose, owner of Broadmoor.

1938: The decade sees a change in steam and coal engines. This year, an autonomous gasoline wagon is installed, considered the first of its kind.

1964: Where the General Electric Co. of New York was called upon for the gas fleet, now Swiss Locomotive Works enters the fold. The Swiss company delivers two red wagons – the first in a series that sets the standard for the modern era.

1974: With tourism booming and operators looking for a train that can carry more than 200 people, Swiss Locomotive Works delivers a pair of diesel-hydraulic wagons. Others were eventually added and used in the 2000s.

2018: After 126 years of service, the railway decides not to open for the season, following a major assessment of infrastructure and equipment.

2021: The railway returns with improved trains – and three new ones from Swiss manufacturer Stadler – as well as a restructured cogwheel track. The deposit is also renovated.

Live train information is now available for the first time on a heritage railway thanks to the Swanage Railway and real-time trains and a grant from the Culture Restoration Fund.

Digital displays in 1950s-style bulletin board frames will give up-to-date information about trains, including the locomotive that carries them and the facilities on board. These cards have been installed at Swanage and Corfe Castle stations, and further cards are expected to be installed at Norden and Harmans Cross.

This live train information is now also available on the trains website in real time.

This is all possible thanks to a partnership between the Swanage Railway and Real Time Trains, which provides live train information to three million passengers per year.

The new system works with GPS equipment that has been installed in the wagons, which then returns the position of the train via mobile phone networks.

For the past 14 months, Tom Cairns has been working on the Know Your Train feature on Real Time Trains. It has hosted Locomotive Services Ltd, Avanti West Coast, Northern and GB Railfreight, among others, but the Swanage Railway is the first heritage railway to join the program.

EL PASO, Texas – El Paso Locomotive FC ended Rio Grande Valley FC’s winning streak at Southwest University Park behind a goal from forward Luis Solignac on Saturday night. EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – For the second day in a row, El Paso Locomotive FC have added another goalkeeper to their roster. The team announced on Friday that they had signed on loan from Adrian Zendejas of Minnesota United, pending league and federation approval.

The move comes just 24 hours after the signing of Ben Beaury, who started last season for Reno 1868 FC.

Locomotive FC is a short keeper with starter Logan Ketterer still playing with Portland Timbers FC on loan. From Tullah, the next stop for puffer lovers is Sheffield, 101 kilometers away. The Tasmanian City of Murals is also home to the Sheffield Steam and Heritage Center. Here, the Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society runs a steam train along another two-foot track. It also hosts SteamFest, an annual event that draws thousands of visitors.

I pass through Sheffield on the festival weekend: the joint is skipping and the queue for train rides is long. As I’m finding out, it’s a push to bundle multiple heritage train experiences into a single weekend, given the distances and race times. For me, taking the train from Sheffield will have to wait another time.

Near Devonport on Sheffield’s north coast is the Don River Railway, which offers 30-minute round trips along the namesake tidal river. At the junction near Coles Beach, passengers descend onto the grassy platform, take a few photos, and jump on board to return to Don. I visit on a day without a steam locomotive, so the conductor just walks around the car to change direction. Travel always channels an old-fashioned vibe, especially when a driver comes to click on tickets and sit on armrests to chat with passengers. None of the children on board are looking at their phones.

Not all Tasmanian rail experiences are the sit and relax type. Maydena is a former logging and commercial town located along a dead end road to Franklin National Park – Gordon Wild Rivers. It follows Derby’s lead in the northeast by becoming a hot destination for mountain biking. Many homes are now vacation rentals. The permanent population is approximately 50 inhabitants.

Some locals help lead a quieter chase for visitors. Maydena Railtrack Riders use part of a historic railway line (when arriving in Maydena you will pass several “Level crossing not used” signs). The pilot in this attraction is not you but rather the two- to four-seater wheeled vehicle that pedals along the tracks. It’s tough work – the trail to the Florentine station is not flat – but an all-terrain quad can push those signaling.

“A lot of people who are interested in rail want to give it a try,” says experiment creator Geoff Williams. “We try to make sure that it doesn’t matter if you’re in good shape or not.” I’m happy with that, because I’m blowing and blowing as hard as Wee Georgie Wood when that push finally comes to push.
