Boris Johnson: I wear a mask wherever the rules tell me to have to

Boris Johnson is traveling by train without a mask – just hours after apologizing for not wearing one to a hospital.

Passengers were shocked to see the prime minister flout his own government advice on face coverings.

And to heal the injuries, it happened on a trip north as news emerged that the Tories were abandoning the Leeds section of the HS2 rail link.

Mr Johnson’s latest insult to millions of people following Covid guidelines came on Thursday as he boarded a train from Manchester’s Oxford Road station to Warrington Bank Quay.

A source said: “I got in the car and half of it was taped. A large group boarded the stranded side, under surveillance.

“There were people around the PM and a few of his employees were obviously not wearing masks – unlike the rest of the passengers. “

Mr Johnson said just a few weeks ago: ‘There are a lot of steps we need to take. Common sense things – washing your hands, wearing a mask in confined spaces where you meet people you don’t normally meet. It makes sense.

A review of six studies around the world shows that masks reduce infection rates by 53%.

Robert West, professor of health psychology at University College London, criticized Mr Johnson.

He said: “We have such strong evidence and I have become convinced that masks make a substantial difference on infections. It is mainly to protect others.

“We know people in public office like Boris Johnson don’t wear masks. They think, “Why should I wear a mask? It has this negative effect.

“It’s beyond irresponsibility for someone like him to do this.”

The Prime Minister had previously aroused fury after being ordered three times to put on a mask during a visit to Hexham General Hospital in Northumberland.

On Wednesday, he told MPs he “mistakenly” did not wear a mask – but was without a face covering for “barely 30 seconds”.

He said, “I apologize.”

He was also unmasked at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.
