A new tourist train will cross the southern Adirondacks

Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway LLC is now selling tickets for trips beginning May 22 and continuing through September.

The train departs from Corinth for a 90-minute journey north through the southern Adirondacks. Among the stops planned so far is the Fossil Stone Winery.

It will be hauled by an Alco S-1 locomotive built in Schenectady in 1943.

The company is also building a new small station at the Corinthe stop.

The owners also run Adirondack Cruise and Charter on Saratoga Lake.

On the railroad, they plan a variety of events, including Friday night pizza trains, a Sunday ice cream train, fall foliage trains, and a Christmas train.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. First-class seats in a dining car and a $200 ride in the locomotive itself are also offered.

The rail line has not been used since 2018 when the Saratoga and North Creek Railway closed. This company wanted to sell its portion of the railroad, north of North Creek, to Warren County. County officials did not buy it, and the company went out of business, claiming the tourist line was a financial loss.

But the owners of the new business said their route would be a hit because it’s shorter and connects to local businesses, like the winery.

Rail along the route is owned by Corinth and Warren County.

The future of the northern part of the line, beyond North Creek, called the Tahawus Line, is yet to be determined: some want it to be turned into a multi-purpose track, while some operators want it to be used for freight traffic. An auction is scheduled for this line on March 3 according to a listing on Atlantic Northeast Rails and Ports.

At the moment it is heavily overrun. Saratoga and North Creek Railway has stored 22 surplus tank cars on the tracks just north of North Creek for over two years. After closing the tourist line, the company removed the petrol cars under pressure from county officials and environmentalists.
